The Head Gardener
A short film about a caretaker of an ancient garden who has become so intertwined with his garden that he has become one with it - transforming his anatomy. Visually, it consists of a single shot panning inwards of a gardener whose face splits open at the center revealing and taking on a flower-like shape, yet with horrific fleshy textures.
The inspiration for this was a desire to combine beauty and horror in one binary aesthetic using references like timelapses of flowers blossoming and lions roaring. It is a VFX project involving geometry (face) tracking, modelling, texturing, look-dev and animation, and it took about 5 weeks to complete using mostly only Houdini for 3D (some part of the animation was done in Maya) and texturing in copernicus, and Nuke for the 2D compositing.
